South Asian Heritage Month 2026: Unity in Diversity

Every July, South Asian Heritage Month offers an opportunity to celebrate the cultures, histories and achievements of South Asian communities across the UK. More than a celebration, it is a time to reflect on the journeys that have shaped our communities, recognise the contributions of generations past and inspire future generations to embrace their heritage with pride.

The 2026 theme, "Unity in Diversity," reminds us that while South Asia is home to an extraordinary range of languages, faiths, cultures and traditions, it is our shared values of family, resilience, community and belonging that connect us. It also reflects the diversity within the British South Asian experience itself, where every individual has their own story, yet together we contribute to the rich fabric of modern Britain.

From healthcare and education to business, public service, arts, sport and community leadership, British South Asians continue to make significant contributions to society. These achievements are built on the sacrifices, determination and aspirations of previous generations who established lives in the UK while maintaining strong connections to their heritage.

For many of us, identity is not defined by choosing one culture over another but by embracing both. We can celebrate our languages, traditions, faiths and family histories while also recognising our place within an increasingly diverse Britain. South Asian Heritage Month encourages us to have these conversations, share our experiences and celebrate the richness that different perspectives bring.

At BRIG, we believe that diversity is one of our greatest strengths. Creating opportunities for people to tell their stories helps build understanding, challenge stereotypes and strengthen relationships across communities. Whether through food, music, literature, art, faith, language or personal experience, every story contributes to a broader understanding of what it means to be South Asian in Britain today.

BRIG has teamed up with local creatives to host a series of workshops called Through Our Eyes. These will take place on the 22nd, 23rd and 24th of July at the BRIG café, 54-57 Allison Street, B5 5TH. Everyone is welcome, and you don’t need to be from a South Asian background to take part.

How You Can Get Involved

There are many ways to celebrate South Asian Heritage Month:

  • Attend local community events, exhibitions, talks and cultural celebrations.

  • Share your own story through writing, photography, music, poetry, cooking or social media.

  • Learn about the history of South Asian communities in Britain and the lasting impact they have had on our society.

  • Support South Asian-owned businesses, artists and community organisations.

  • Take the opportunity to have meaningful conversations about culture, heritage and belonging.

If you are organising a South Asian Heritage Month event, we would love to help promote it through BRIG's newsletter and social media channels. Please send details to info@wearebrig.co.uk or contact us via our Facebook page, Birmingham Race Impact Group, or Instagram @wearebrig.

Let's use this month to celebrate our differences, learn from one another and recognise that our diversity is one of our greatest collective strengths.
