Why International Women’s Day?

Well let me be clear, here at Shakti, we celebrate women all year around. We believe in the unique beauty and passions of each and every woman. Babe you are a goddess. But we’re also about supporting women, especially black women, to navigate the sometimes-hostile terrane they find themselves in. We do this by providing safe women friendly spaces where colour-blindness, gaslighting, and haters are forbidden to enter, but also by providing evidence of other voices, stories of their trials and victories, that real women can relate to, find hope and the inspiration they need to keep going.

Unless we sit in the circles of women like us, we can forget the truth, we can be reminded that the masks we wear to get by, are not who we are, but how we survive.

Let us also not forget, International Women’s Day began on the 8th March 1857, with one of the first documented organised strikes by working women during which they called for a shorter work day and decent wages. And current statistics remind us at our current rate of progress it may be another 202 years before we achieve gender pay parity. So let us not just celebrate the women who have stuck their necks out for the pay and conditions for other women, but those women who will not rest until our daughters can expect the exact opportunities afforded our sons.

Each one of us is an international woman. Each one of us has the power to make things better for other women.

Use this day to consider our power and whether or not we use our power to simply get ahead and shine or to progress other women.

Happy International Women’s Day

“Each of us has a unique part to play in the healing of the world.”
