Inspiring Launch Unites Midlands Women Against the Far Right

Over 70 people gathered at Nexus Cafe, Birmingham City Centre for the Midlands launch of Women Against the Far Right, an inspiring and empowering evening celebrating women’s activism, solidarity and community action.

The event brought together local campaigners, poets, speakers, and allies from across the region with a shared commitment to challenge hate, division, and the rise of far-right. The launch marks the beginning of a growing Midlands network within the wider national Stand Up to Racism movement, dedicated to empowering women’s voices and building connections across communities.

From the start, the atmosphere was one of warmth, determination and hope. Attendees were treated to an evening of inspiring speeches and moving poetry readings, all highlighting the strength and resilience of women taking a stand against racism and hate.

One attendee reflected, “It was an inspiring and positive night. Glad to meet new people and create a feeling of hope.”

Another added, “It was a fabulous event! Speeches and poetry readings were inspiring. It was lovely to meet like-minded beautiful souls.”

The night’s programme featured a diverse range of contributors who spoke powerfully about organising, resistance and the role of women in driving positive social change. There was a strong sense of unity and shared purpose throughout. As one participant said, “So inspirational this evening, thank you to everyone who organised and was a part of it. There was so much love in that room.”

Speakers emphasised the urgency of collective action and the need to challenge divisive narratives with creativity and solidarity. Another attendee summed up the spirit of the night: “What a brilliant evening hearing and meeting so many inspirational women! Together we can stop the far right!”

The event concluded with a renewed commitment to continue building the Midlands network, strengthening local partnerships and creating safe, inclusive spaces for women to lead community action. As one guest perfectly captured, “Great video, discussions and poetry... fantastic evening. Thank you and yes, we rise.”

The Women Against the Far Right Midlands Launch has already sparked new connections and plans for future collaboration across the region. Organisers said they were “deeply moved” by the turnout and enthusiasm, adding that this event “proved how powerful women’s solidarity can be in standing up for equality, justice and against the rise of the far-right.

Looking ahead, WAtFR are already preparing for their next major event. Formed as a result of this meeting, Women Against the Far Right Birmingham & Black Country are holding a Unity Rally in Birmingham City Centre on Sunday 23rd November at 5pm. The rally will be led by a Procession of Light to mark the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women and Girls. The event plans to bring all communities together, united against racism, hate and division.
