Islamophobia Response Unit to Host Community Event on Islamophobia in Sport and Society

The Islamophobia Response Unit (IRU), the only Muslim-led legal charity in England and Wales dedicated exclusively to supporting victims of Islamophobia, is set to host a major community event this May in Birmingham.

Taking place on 17 May at 2PM at The Bordesley Centre in Sparkbrook, “Islamophobia in Sport & Society” will bring together legal experts, community voices, and organisations to explore the realities of Islamophobia across public life.

Run by a team of lawyers, the IRU provides free legal advice, tribunal representation, and emotional support to those affected by Islamophobia. Since 2022, the organisation has supported over 2,000 individuals, offering practical and community-focused assistance to those navigating discrimination and injustice.

The upcoming event aims to both educate and empower attendees. Through a programme of panel discussions and open conversation, it will examine the challenges faced by Muslims in everyday life—from political discourse to media representation—while also focusing specifically on the experiences of Islamophobia within sport.

Speakers will include representatives and contributors from Birmingham United FC and the Football Association, as well as Sähëli Hub, The 3 Hijabis, and the National Association of Muslim Police. Together, they will offer a range of perspectives on tackling discrimination and building more inclusive environments.

In addition to raising awareness, the event will provide practical guidance on accessing IRU’s free legal services, ensuring that those affected by Islamophobia understand their rights and the support available to them.

Tickets are priced at £5, with refreshments included, and the event is open to all members of the public. A limited number of free tickets are also available for community partners, including BRIG, via a dedicated booking link.

Organisers hope the event will not only spark meaningful discussion but also strengthen community connections and lay the groundwork for future collaboration in addressing Islamophobia at both local and national levels.

Further information, including booking details, is available via Eventbrite. Attendees are encouraged to secure their places early and be part of what promises to be an important and timely conversation.
