The Birmingham Black Policing Charter Steering Group Takes Shape

On Thursday, 21st May, BRIG and APA hosted the first Steering Group meeting in support of the Birmingham Black Policing Charter. From religious leaders to academics and activists, the meeting brought together a range of passionate members of the community, unified by a drive for change.

Part of a wider national effort to address the growing mistrust between police and Black communities, the Birmingham Black Policing Charter aims to define anti-racist policing, providing a process where community members can inform what policing looks like in practice.

This first meeting illuminated the Charter’s main aims, as attendees established key frameworks and outreach strategies informed by their own lived experience. The group acknowledged that trust cannot be built on words alone and focus must centre around engagement and action. The conversation was both productive and emotionally charged as members confronted the challenges faced by local communities.

The next steering group meeting is set to take place on June 26th as members continue to discuss how the project will take shape. If you are interested in engaging with the Birmingham Black Policing Charter project,  please contact hareena@wearebrig.co.uk for enquiries.
