PHUNK! Music of Defiance & Celebration is back on Friday, September 25th 2026, at the BRIG Café at the Warehouse.
Bringing a unique blend of global beats from hip hop to Latin to Bhangra, with rhyme-and-rhythm duo DJ Deesh and Kadence Music.
The night is a collaboration between Birmingham Race Impact Group (BRIG), Beyond Racism, Stories That Made Us and Unite The People.
PHUNK! is a political night of funk (P-Funk) – challenging racism through art and culture. It invites people into a safe space of community, music and dance. It's also about celebrating global music and culture that pre-dates smart technology with live music, vinyl and CDs.
A unique evening brought to life by the legendary DJ Deesh with the brilliant Kadence Music. Hardish Virk, aka DJ Deesh, is an artist, curator and producer who has been involved in music since the late 1980s as a DJ, and then producing music in the 1990s, while also running DJ and music production workshops for young people and adults with learning disabilities.
Mahendra Patel is a musician, creative, founder of Kadence Music and an arts accessibility consultant. His musical journey began in his childhood playing tabla at his local temple. After experiencing a mild stroke, he decided to pursue music full time and also runs free drumming wellbeing workshops.
The duo have performed together at anti-racism events and festivals across the region, but their collaboration comes with a twist. DJ Deesh plans the set, but Mahendra never knows what's coming next.
This is your chance to dance the night away with justice, peace and unity vibes. Meet new people, catch up with friends - in a welcoming, safe space where everyone can enjoy great music together.
Expect a mix of sounds: Hip-Hop, Soul, Funk, Disco, Reggae, Ska, Latin, Bhangra, Bollywood, Desi Beatz - plus visuals and special guest performances. Desi snacks and bar.
