Cafe Conversations
Café Conversations is a community-led programme based at BRIG Café in Birmingham, creating a welcoming and inclusive space for people to come together, listen, learn, and have meaningful conversations across difference.
At a time when conversations about race, faith, identity, poverty, climate justice, and social justice can become increasingly polarised, Café Conversations provides an opportunity to slow down, listen to different perspectives, and build relationships through respectful dialogue. It is a space where people can explore challenging issues without fear of judgement, while recognising that meaningful change begins with connection, understanding, and a willingness to listen.
Through a programme of facilitated open forums, small-group discussions, and creative community events, Café Conversations will bring people together from different faiths, cultures, backgrounds, generations, and experiences. Conversations may explore issues affecting Birmingham and wider society, with participants helping to shape the topics and formats based on what matters to their communities.
The programme combines facilitated discussion with creative approaches including spoken word, poetry, storytelling, music, and other forms of expression, creating different ways for people to share experiences and perspectives.
Café Conversations is not about everyone reaching the same conclusion. It is about creating the conditions for people to listen with curiosity, engage respectfully with difference, challenge assumptions, and find common ground where possible.
Over time, the programme aims to strengthen relationships across communities, develop confidence and communication skills, reduce isolation, and create a stronger culture of dialogue in Birmingham. The café will provide a physical space where conversations can begin—and continue through relationships, community activity, and ongoing engagement beyond each session.
