Hate Crime Awareness
Birmingham City Council wants residents to know that hate crimes are serious offences motivated by prejudice or hostility towards a person’s identity or perceived difference. These crimes can target someone because of their race, religion, sexual orientation, disability, gender identity, or other personal characteristics. Hate crimes can take many forms, including verbal abuse, threats, harassment, bullying, assault, or property damage.
Anyone can be affected, whether by strangers or people known to them, including acquaintances or carers who may exploit relationships for financial or criminal gain. Victims and witnesses are urged to report hate crimes to West Midlands Police by calling 101 (or 999 in emergencies).
More information and support can be found through the Birmingham Community Safety Partnership at www.birmingham-community-safety-partnership.co.uk. Everyone deserves to feel safe and respected in Birmingham.
