Man Jailed for Life After Racially Aggravated Rape of Sikh Woman

A 32‑year‑old man, John Ashby, has been sentenced to life imprisonment after admitting to the racially and religiously aggravated rape and assault of a Sikh woman in her 20s at her home in Walsall, West Midlands.

The attack occurred in broad daylight in September 2025, after Ashby followed the victim from a bus to her house. Prosecutors at Birmingham Crown Court described a brutal assault lasting approximately 24 minutes, during which the victim was beaten, strangled, and raped.

Court testimony revealed that Ashby hurled racist and religious abuse, calling the victim a “bloody Muslim bitch,” despite her identifying as Sikh. His words and actions made clear that the attack was motivated by both race and religion.

The judge described Ashby as a deeply unpleasant racist and Islamophobe, emphasising the severity of the crime and the threat he posed to the community, and imposed a substantial minimum term as part of the life sentence.

We at the Birmingham Race Impact Group are appalled and heartbroken by this racially and religiously motivated attack.

We see this violent act as part of a rising tide of racist attacks, particularly targeting women, children, and elders. A toxic environment has been created, fueled by divisive political rhetoric and media narratives that scapegoat minority communities.

As a community, we call on everyone to stand against hate and ensure that such violence is never tolerated. Together, we will continue to fight for safety, justice, and equality for all.
