BRIG + DEEP Public Education Meeting
What should our children learn — and who gets to decide?
Birmingham is one of the UK’s youngest and most diverse cities, with an ambition to become a "world-leading anti-racist city by 2035. The seriousness of that ambition needs to be matched by an anti-racist approach to education across all phases of learning — from the earliest years through to further and higher education.
So what should an education fit for an anti-racist Birmingham look like?
Does the curriculum reflect the city Birmingham is today?
Whose histories, knowledge and experiences are included, and who gets to help shape what our children learn?
Birmingham Race Impact Group (BRIG) and Decolonising Education & Empowerment Partnership (DEEP) are bringing together parents, teachers, young people and community members for a public conversation about education, schools and the community.
We’ll hear from educators, researchers and community voices, and explore what the evidence tells us about the experiences and outcomes of different groups of young people. Participants will be invited to consider what a curriculum that reflects Birmingham today, while preparing young people for the world of tomorrow, could look like.
But this isn’t just a meeting to hear from speakers. We want to hear from you.
What needs to change? What should we keep and build upon? What role should parents, teachers, young people, and communities play in shaping the education Birmingham’s children receive?
